In Scotland, the tea break is not an afterthought, but a fixed moment of rest in the day — a short break with a steaming cup of tea, preferably in company. With the right tea and a few simple habits, you can effortlessly bring that atmosphere into your home.
What exactly is a Scottish Tea Break?
The tea break is a British and Scottish tradition: a fixed moment, usually mid-morning or afternoon, to do nothing for a while but drink a cup of tea. Scotland is among the countries with the highest per capita tea consumption in the world — tea is more of a habit than a luxury there. It is not about an elaborate high tea with a tiered stand full of pastries, but about a small, recurring moment of rest in the day.
Choose a tea with character: Edinburgh Tea and Coffee
At Mood Company, we sell tea from Edinburgh Tea and Coffee, a tea house that has been around since 1812. The brand was founded by Andrew Melrose in Edinburgh and still blends its tea artisanally, in small batches, by experienced tea blenders. The tea is Fairtrade and Organic Food Federation certified, and is shipped from our own stock — not via dropshipping.

Which tea suits which moment?
- Morning or in need of a strong cup: Scottish Breakfast
- Quiet afternoon moment: Refined Earl Grey with bergamot — 'a true piece of Scotland in every sip'
- Curious about something typically Scottish: Thistle, with a light, floral taste
- Taste everything at once: the Scottish Flavored Triple Tea Pack with Whiskey Tea, Thistle Tea and Earl Gray Tea
This is how you make the perfect cup
The preparation is the same for all variants: use 1 teaspoon of loose tea or 1 tea bag per cup of approximately 200 to 250 ml, pour freshly boiled water at 100°C over it, and let the tea steep for 3 to 5 minutes to taste. When using loose tea, preferably use a tea infuser or egg so that the leaves can fully unfold.
Make a moment of it
A Scottish tea break is just as much about the ritual as it is about the tea itself. Set down a cup, put your phone aside for a moment, and perhaps light a scented candle — for example, one of the Scottish fragrances from Isle of Skye Candle Company — for an atmosphere that goes just a little further than 'a quick cup of tea'.
Also nice as a small daily ritual
You don't have to wait for a special occasion to schedule a tea break: this habit proves its worth best precisely as a regular, short moment between tasks. A few minutes with a cup of tea can be just as refreshing as a short walk.
