Which type of wool should I choose? The pros and cons of wool blankets
"Which type of wool should I choose?" We often get this question, so here is a concise explanation of the pros and cons of each wool type.
To start with some general characteristics of wool:
- All wool blankets are very durableNot only are they long lasting, but wool itself is a natural, renewable material.
- Colourfast. Wool is a material that retains color well, preventing it from fading.
- Wool is timeless. We often hear: "Oh, we used to have a blanket like that at home." But of course are there In addition to the traditional patterns, more and more new designs can be found.
- Wool is easy to maintain. 'Wool cleans itself' well, not entirely of course but this statement comes from the fact that wool itself does not retain dirt. Nowadays many blankets can be washed on a wool program with wool detergent (especially check the washing instructions) but we are still a bit old-fashioned... Just air it outside or if it snows again: Take the plaid outside into the snow, beat it out, dry it naturally (not near a heat source) and you have a lovely fresh plaid again. That's how our grandparents did it with woolen products.
- And perhaps the most important general characteristic of wool... nice and warm...
We would like to advise you on the type of wool:
- 100% new wool of Tartan or Herringbone pattern: the real blankets as you may remember them from your grandmother. Often a bit thicker and a bit stiffer at first. Favorable pricing.
- 100% new wool, other: These are often the blankets with a more modern design and they are airily woven, supple and soft, with a favorable price.
- Recycled wool: Extra sustainable because these blankets are made from old blankets that, together with a part of new materials are completely rewoven into new blankets. Characteristic is a high density (feels a bit like felt), at first it feels a bit stiffer but that quickly disappears and then the blanket feels soft.
- Lambswool (Shetland & Merino): these blankets are often more expensive, but in return you get an extra thin blanket that feels wonderfully soft.
For quality, warmth and style you have come to the right place. We sell beautiful wool blankets in various sizes and colors, mainly originating from the United Kingdom.
