Can I wash my wool blanket?

According to many it is possible, but we certainly do not recommend it. Generally, they do not look better after washing. This winter there might finally be snow again. And as grandmother might still remember, it is time to clean wool. However, hanging it in the mist is a less romantic image, but it can certainly be done!!

The best way to clean a wool blanket

    • Place your wool blanket in the snow (preferably fresh dry snow) and make sure snow also accumulates on top.
    • Let your wool blanket sit for about half an hour.
    • Then, hit the blanket with the back of a broom (the old-fashioned rug beater is something almost no one has anymore ;-). The small amount of ammonia in the snow reacts with the cold air and helps to loosen the dirt, allowing it to fall out of the blanket.
    • Then let your blanket sit for another half hour.
    • Repeat this one or two more times
    • Finally, shake the snow off your blanket and hang your blanket out in the freezing cold for another half hour. This will allow the last remnants of snow to come off naturally without getting wet.

Cleaning a wool blanket without snow

Of course, we don't always have snow. An alternative is to hang your blanket in the mist. This will give your wool blanket a fresh scent but will not clean it like snow does. Do not wash your blanket in the washing machine and certainly never put it in the dryer. For a deep clean, you may consider going to the dry cleaner. But if it snows..... take the opportunity to clean your wool blanket as our ancestors have done for many centuries.
